Earth, timber and lime

What the houses are made of, and why it matters on a hot afternoon.

The three villas are built the way houses in the valley have long been built: thick earth walls, timber ceilings and lime plaster.

Earth walls are slow to warm and slow to cool. They temper the heat of the afternoon and give some of it back after dark.

Timber beams carry the roofs, and lime plaster lets the walls breathe. Both are repaired by hand, the way they were made.

The tiles come from workshops where each piece is still painted with a fine brush.
